Many years later...

Millions of years after Protheus had first bestowed the Just Gems – powerful crystalline principles intended to guide the development of life – upon a remote planet, he observed the slow progress of its burgeoning societies. He noted with growing impatience that, by the medieval era, the kingdoms had fallen into a profound stagnation, seemingly stuck in time. Unwilling to wait another few centuries for natural advancement, Protheus devised a more direct intervention.

He unleashed a plague—cruel, chaotic, and utterly unpredictable.

It did not follow the laws of nature. It struck without pattern, ignoring age, status, or geography. One day, a village would awaken to find half its population lifeless; the next, a royal court would collapse overnight. The disease left no clues, no cures, and no mercy. It was not a test of strength or wisdom—it was a reminder of mortality, delivered with terrifying randomness.

The kings, once secure in their castles and power, were shaken to their core. Their wealth could not shield them, their armies could not fight it, and their scholars could not explain it. For the first time in centuries, they feared death more than war.

Then came the Whisperer.

Dispatched by Protheus, the Whisperer arrived as a living embodiment of hope—or manipulation. He proclaimed that eternal life was now within reach. It could be achieved in one of two ways: either through the discovery of two elusive elixirs, or by uniting specific, powerful gems upon the four ancient Pillars, which, the Whisperer revealed, had been constructed centuries ago atop the highest, snow-capped mountains.

The Whisperer held secret meetings with select wizards across the world, revealing the exact, perilous locations of these pillars. He made it abundantly clear that eternity was a prize for those truly willing to risk everything. The dangers surrounding these monumental structures were not merely the treacherous, frozen temperatures; sinister Dark angels were also drawn to the very moment these gems were seated upon the pillars, guarding them fiercely.

Within just twenty years, Protheus witnessed the burgeoning of his planted seed. While some wizards dismissed the tale, others, driven by fear, boredom, or sheer curiosity, lacked the immediate resources for such an undertaking. Thus, they eventually brought the Whisperer's message to the kings, who possessed the vast means—and now the desperate motivation—to pursue such an extraordinary quest.

And so, a relentless war erupted among the kingdoms, each vying for the holy grail of eternity. From light-years distant across the galaxy, Protheus could see his plan was indeed unfolding; a potent, though unforeseen, impetus had jolted society. Yet, it was not the push he had expected. The ruthless hunt and bloodshed commenced, all focused on acquiring the fabled gems, even those long believed lost or deeply hidden. The chase, fuelled by a desperate lust for immortality and a terror of the plague’s next strike, consumed the world.
